PLATA O PLOMO (MONEY or LEAD)   English

Is an Independent film, it practically had no budget, other than the money I earn at my day job to help buy props and feed the crew! This is a full length picture, it was shot guerrilla style, in diverse locations of the city of Miami and some in Medellin, Colombia.  Production took two years, shooting the picture was a mission withing itself,  because all the talent had day jobs as well, so we would have to schedule shoots according to their work schedules.

My influence was taken from the Italian Neo-realist movement and from a well known Colombian director, Victor Gaviria.  They inspired me to write the script thinking about natural talent.  With no budget, getting professional actors wasn’t realistic in my plans, but something interesting happened and I’ll tell you about that later.  I really had to think hard about the people I knew. Who? would have the drive, the responsibility and the creative ability to stand in front of a camera and act.  This was the key so I could  attach them to the role I would write for the story.  Believe me it wasn’t easy, but I had an idea and I was hungry to execute it.

All this inspiration came from necessity, I knocked on several doors to try and get support and funding to shoot my film, and surely the doors would close. I was fresh out of film school, and didn’t have the credibility.  The short films I did were just not enough for me to get someone to finance me.  Most of them said it was too ambitious and it would probably cost allot of money to make it, others said that they weren’t interested in investing in a picture about Colombians and drug dealing in the U.S.   Oh well, I was disappointed, but I wasn’t  giving up so easily!  I knew I had to be really creative and do it on my own. ”With my fingernails,” as we say in Colombia.

Now let me rephrase what I just said, we all know that one person can not make a feature film on his own! I did have the help of friends and family and that was a true blessing from the start.

SOBRE LA PELICULA PLATA O PLOMO  Español

Es una pelicula independiente, fue rodada practicamente sin presupuesto, con la excepcion del dinero que gano en mi trabajo del diario, que me ayudo a comprar los props y alimentar al equipo durante produccion!  Es un largometraje, fue grabada en diversos lugares de la ciudad de Miami, y la ciudad de Medellin Colombia.  La produccion tardo dos años, rodar la pelicula fue un verdadero reto, porque todo el talento y los que participaron tambien tenian sus trabajos, asi que organizabamos los horarios de rodaje de acuerdo a sus dias libres.

Mi influencia nacio del movimiento Italiano del neo-realismo y de un director Colombiano que se llama Victor Gaviria.  Esto me inspiro a escribir el libreto pensando en el talento natural.  Sin presupuesto, encontrar actores profesionales no era real en mis planes, pero algo muy interesante sucedio y se enteraran mas adelante.  Estuve pensando mucho en las personas que conocia. Quien? tuviera las pilas, la responsabilidad y el aspecto creativo para pararse frente a una camara y actuar.  Esto era clave para poderlo incluir como personaje en mi historia.  Creanme, no fue facil. Pero, tenia una idea y mucho deseo de ejecutarla.

Toda esta inspiracion surgio de la necesidad.  Toque varias puertas para intentar recaudar fondos y apoyo para poder rodar mi pelicula, y claro me cerraban las puertas.  La razon, estaba recien graduado, y no tenia la credibilidad.  Los cortometrajes que hice en la universidad simplemente no eran lo suficiente para que alguien me diera los fondos.  Muchos de ellos dijeron que el proyecto era demasiado ambicioso y que costaria mucho dinero realizarlo, otros me dijeron que no estaban interesados en invertir en una pelicula sobre Colombianos y narcotrafico en los Estados Unidos.   Bueno, me senti un poco triste y defraudado, pero no me iba a rendir tan facil!   Sabia que tenia que ser muy creativo, y lanzarme  a hacerlo solo.  ”Con las uñas,” como decimos en Colombia.

Y dejenme aclarar algo, todos sabemos que una sola persona no crea una pelicula especialmente un largo solo!  Lo hice con la ayuda de amigos y familia.  Eso fue una verdadera bendicion.
